Manuel Alegre was a Spanish engraver. Educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando under the tutelage of Manuel Salvador Carmona, at the age of 22 he received his first award for his portrait of the painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.

He participated in the most important engraving projects of his time such as the series of Portraits of Illustrious Spaniards, engraving four of the portraits, or the Company for the Engraving of the Paintings of the Royal Palaces. He also made engravings of different Royal Sites and outstanding buildings, such as the Monastery of El Escorial. Despite his participation in the aforementioned companies, the economic difficulties that he dragged throughout his life forced him to accept minor jobs and in 1816 his heirs sold the plates that the author kept to the Royal Chalcography.
