Rafael Esteve y Vilella, was a Spanish engraver from Valencia, considered one of the exponents of Spanish Romanticism and one of the last masters of reproduction engraving. He learned drawing and engraving at the San Carlos Academy of Valencia, under the direction of Manuel Bru, and later in Madrid as a pensioner of the Royal Academy of San Fernando.

On his return to his hometown he was awarded the First Prize for Engraving of the Academy of San Carlos, an institution that later and counting the artist with only twenty-four years, named him Academician of Merit. He was appointed Chamber Engraver of S.M. King Charles IV, where he met and befriended Francisco de Goya, who came to paint a portrait of him. After the Peninsula War he was again appointed Chamber Engraver with the now King Ferdinand VII.

In 1839 he was awarded the gold medal first class at the Exhibition of Fine Arts in Paris with what would be his most important work, The Miracle of the Waters, that same year he was awarded the Supernumerary Cross of the Order of Charles III, was named academician of merit of the Royal Academy of San Fernando and of honor of that of San Carlos. In 1841 was appointed director of the National Chalcography and corresponding academician of the Royal Institute of France.
