The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, founded in 1752 during the reign of Ferdinand VI, is the Spanish cultural institution with the longest history. It houses one of the best art collections in the country, spanning five centuries and different schools, offering a complete overview of the history of art from the Renaissance to the most current trends of the 21st century. The Academy conserves an exceptional heritage made up of more than 1.500 paintings, 1.300 sculptures, 18.000 drawings, 40.000 prints and 9.000 intaglio matrices, as well as furniture, gold and silverware, ceramic materials, medals, etc. As for the photography collection, made up of 1.000 original paper copies, original negatives and modern positives, one of the rooms on the third floor of the Museum shows a selection of these through temporary monographic exhibitions.
