Juan Barcelón y Abellán was a Spanish painter and intaglio engraver, he studied drawing with Francisco Salzillo and painting with Juan Bernabé Palomino as a student of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, being awarded the highest distinction of the same: the appointment of Academic of Merit in 1777. During his time as a student, he was awarded two other prizes from this corporation: The first prize in the Painting Contest in 1760 and the first prize in the Engraving Contest in 1763. Dedicated exclusively to engraving since 1762, he stood out in the most important projects undertaken by the Academy in those years.
